Zelenskyy Calls on Europe to Take Action, Not Wait for US Leadership on Ukraine Crisis (2026)

It's time for Europe to wake up and take charge! Volodymyr Zelenskyy's powerful message at Davos shook the audience, urging them to break free from the 'Greenland mode' mentality.

In a bold and passionate speech, Zelenskyy highlighted Europe's reliance on external leadership, specifically the US, to navigate geopolitical crises. He emphasized that a year has passed since his plea for Europe to defend itself, yet little has changed.

"Europe remains in Greenland mode, hoping someone else will take the lead. But what if that someone doesn't show up?" he questioned.

Zelenskyy's speech was a direct call to action, challenging Europe to step up and protect itself. He criticized the sending of a mere 14 or 40 soldiers to Greenland, questioning the message it sends to potential adversaries like Putin and China.

"Europe must learn to defend itself," he reiterated.

He proposed that Ukraine could be a key player in defending Europe against a potential Russian invasion of Greenland, showcasing Ukraine's expertise in dealing with Russian aggression.

"We know how to handle Russian warships. Ukraine can assist and ensure they don't repeat their actions near Greenland as they did near Crimea," he asserted.

Zelenskyy also urged Europe to take a stronger stance against Russia's 'shadow fleet' of oil tankers, which he believes is a key enabler of Russia's war machine.

"The threats to Europe are real and existential. Europe needs a united armed forces capable of defending the continent," he emphasized.

He questioned Europe's reliance on NATO, asking who would respond if Putin decided to invade Lithuania or strike Poland.

"NATO's existence relies on the belief that the US will act, but what if that belief is misplaced?"

Zelenskyy's speech was a stark reminder of the instability in US leadership and Europe's need to be self-sufficient. It came shortly after his meeting with Trump, where talks for a peace deal to end Russia's war in Ukraine remained stalled.

Trump described the meeting as "good" but acknowledged there was still a long way to go. His envoy, Steve Witkoff, is set to meet with Vladimir Putin, with Witkoff expressing optimism that the remaining issue is solvable.

In a brief comment at Davos, Trump sent a message to Putin, stating, "The war has to end."

Zelenskyy's speech has sparked a much-needed conversation about Europe's role in global security. What are your thoughts on Europe's current stance and the potential consequences of relying solely on external leadership? Feel free to share your opinions in the comments below!
