Utah's Physician Shortage: Breaking Point and Potential Solutions (2026)

Utah's physician shortage is a critical issue that threatens the state's future health. As an aspiring pediatrician and lifelong Utahn, I am deeply concerned about the impact this shortage will have on the well-being of our community. But here's where it gets controversial: while there have been efforts to address the shortage, such as the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) grant, the problem persists due to a lack of comprehensive solutions. Utah's growing population, particularly in urban and suburban areas, exacerbates the shortage, making it harder for residents to access healthcare. The state's medical training landscape has seen some improvements, with the addition of new medical school programs and innovations in medical education. However, these changes have not been enough to address the shortage, especially in rural areas. The shortage of graduate medical education (GME) training positions is a significant barrier, forcing graduating medical students to seek residency training out of state. This not only limits the number of physicians available in Utah but also contributes to the state's brain drain. To address this issue, we need to make further changes to ensure a complete, Utah-oriented medical training apparatus that will retain the talent cultivated by our medical schools and resolve the precarious physician shortage. Medical organizations, industry leaders, and legislators are working to improve and increase medical training opportunities, and as an aspiring pediatrician and lifelong Utahn, I am taking part in these conversations. But here's where it gets thought-provoking: what can we do as a community to support medical education in Utah and ensure that our state's healthcare needs are met? I invite you to share your thoughts and opinions on this important issue.
