According to an oral history published by Garden & Gun in 2024, the shrimp used in the movie were indeed as authentic as they come. Paramount Pictures sourced a significant amount of shrimp, ice, and even a used shovel from the Gay Fish Company, paying a total of $26,939.10 for the supplies on September 7, 1993. This purchase was just the beginning of a shrimp-filled journey.
The shrimp storyline in Forrest Gump has its roots in the life of George Radcliff, a dear friend of Winston Groom, the author of the novel the film is based on. Radcliff's adventurous spirit and larger-than-life persona inspired Groom to create some of Gump's most memorable events, including meeting Elvis Presley and Presidents Nixon and John F. Kennedy. But it was Radcliff's love for shrimp that truly brought the shrimping storyline to life.
Radcliff, after a boisterous and adventurous youth, settled down and bought a shrimp boat called the Baghdad. He spent most of his time shrimping in Mobile Bay, a lifestyle that became a source of inspiration for the film. The knowledge and love for shrimp also came from Jimbo Meador, another childhood friend of Groom's, further adding to the authenticity of the shrimping storyline.
The success of the shrimp storyline in Forrest Gump led to a real-life business venture. Anthony Zolezzi, a businessman, bought the rights to use the name Bubba Gump Shrimp from Paramount Pictures, which he then used to revive his seafood company. The name proved to be a hit, and Zolezzi and his friends licensed it to open an actual restaurant called Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. in 1996. The restaurant became a franchise and was eventually sold to Landry's, Inc. in 2010 for an undisclosed amount. Today, the Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. chain boasts over 30 branches worldwide, a testament to the enduring appeal of Forrest Gump's shrimping adventure.
