The Menopause Health Gap: Uncovering the Truth About Vaginal Dryness (2026)

The menopause health gap is a pressing issue that affects millions of women worldwide, yet it remains largely hidden from public discourse. Vaginal dryness, a common symptom during and after menopause, is experienced by over half of women, yet only a fraction of them ever discuss it with their healthcare provider. This silence represents a significant injustice and a missed opportunity for innovation in women's health.

As an entrepreneur, I've always been drawn to solving problems that matter. When I delved into women's health, I noticed a striking disparity: while there's been tremendous innovation in fertility and pregnancy, the same level of attention hasn't been given to perimenopause and its associated symptoms. This realization led me to found Biolae, a company dedicated to addressing the unmet needs of women's health, particularly during perimenopause.

One of the most exciting aspects of Biolae's mission is our focus on clinical validity. We believe that ingredients should be backed by gold-standard clinical trials, dosed at therapeutic levels, and independently tested for purity and potency. This commitment to evidence-based practices sets a new standard in the industry.

In addition to clinical validity, we understand the importance of connecting with women on a deeper level. Healthcare has traditionally prioritized efficacy while neglecting design, experience, and community. As a former consumer brand builder, I wanted to prove that these aspects aren't mutually exclusive. Biolae aims to create products that not only work but also resonate with women on a personal level.

Our upcoming launch of Australia's first TGA-listed hyaluronic acid pessary is a testament to our dedication to innovation and women's health. This product, developed over three years, represents a significant milestone in our journey. However, we also recognize the weight of responsibility that comes with launching a first-to-market medical device in a personal health category.

Vaginal dryness, while often associated with menopause, is a symptom that affects women in various stages of life. It can occur postpartum, during stressful periods, and as a side effect of certain medications. By pulling vaginal dryness out from under the menopause umbrella, we aim to destigmatize the conversation and empower women to take control of their health.

The cultural shift around menopause has been encouraging, but the stigma surrounding vaginal dryness persists. This gap between the prevalence of the symptom and the lack of public discussion is where we believe the real impact lies. By addressing this gap, we hope to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for women's health.

Building a business in underserved spaces is exhilarating. There's no existing playbook, and the challenges are unique. Launching a first-to-market medical device in consumer health is a rare opportunity, and we're embracing it. Our marketing campaign, Not-So-Dry July, aims to educate women about vaginal dryness while making the conversation less intimidating. We believe that humor, when used thoughtfully, can break down stigma and encourage open dialogue.

Looking ahead, our next big frontier is the pharmacy. By entering this space, we hope to reshape how retailers think about menopause and the role of these products in women's lives. The menopause shelf's position in stores reflects the historical undervaluation of the category, and we're determined to change that.

Despite the setbacks, pivots, and moments of uncertainty we've encountered, the startup journey has been incredibly rewarding. Women's health is finally receiving the attention it deserves, and there are still numerous unmet needs waiting to be addressed. As we continue to innovate and advocate for women's health, I'm excited about the future possibilities that lie ahead.
