Imagine a scene filled with joy and excitement, where the unexpected becomes a moment of pure magic. When Tehlia Castagna, a dedicated teacher from Western Australia, was summoned to the principal's office at Wyndham District High School, she had no inkling that she was about to be asked one of the most significant questions of her life.
Accompanied by her eager students and supportive colleagues, she was guided towards the school library, which was about 3,000 kilometers away from Perth. There, she was greeted by a delightful sight: a line of cheerful children holding brightly colored letters that together formed the phrase "Will you marry me?"
Standing at the entrance of the library was her partner and fellow educator, Reuben Darch, who dramatically dropped to one knee to propose. Known affectionately as Miss Tehlia by her students, she initially struggled to comprehend the scene unfolding before her. "I saw all my children standing there, holding letters, and then the whole school was silent," she recalled. "It took me a moment to grasp what was happening, and I was a bit in shock."
The atmosphere buzzed with excitement when she said yes, prompting cheers of celebration to erupt throughout the school.
The couple's journey began in 2023 during a casual game of frisbee at Kalumburu, one of the most isolated schools in WA's Kimberley region. After relocating to Wyndham, Mr. Darch planned to propose but faced the challenge of keeping his intentions a secret in a tight-knit community of just 1,000 residents. "I had to sneakily organize everything," he explained. "Even getting the ring was tricky; I couldn’t let Tehlia go to the post office."
In the days leading up to the big moment, Mr. Darch enlisted the help of his students to color in various letters without revealing their ultimate purpose. "They didn’t know what it spelled at the time; no one caught on," he shared. "I told them right at the last moment to keep the surprise intact."
Expressing his gratitude, Mr. Darch emphasized how special it was to share this milestone with staff and students, many of whom had been curious about when he and "Miss Tehlia" would tie the knot. As the celebrations continued in the northernmost town of Western Australia, the couple already began mapping out plans for their wedding day.
"We adore the Kimberley, but since our families are based in Perth, it makes sense to have the wedding there," Tehlia remarked. "We’ll certainly host a party here and arrange some photo shoots to capture these beautiful memories."
