Stock Market Update: Fed Decision Impacts Investors (2026)

The stock market is holding its breath... as investors await the Federal Reserve's crucial decision on interest rates. This week's meeting is the final one of the year, and the anticipation is palpable.

Currently, stock futures are showing minimal movement. Futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average are down slightly, by about 19 points, or 0.03%. The S&P futures and Nasdaq 100 futures are also hovering near the flatline.

Stocks have been experiencing a period of slight gains and losses recently. This is because investors are keenly focused on the upcoming Fed meeting. The expectation is that the Fed will likely implement its third consecutive interest rate cut of a quarter percentage point. According to CME's FedWatch tool, there's an approximately 87% chance of a decrease.

But here's where it gets controversial... Sentiment among members of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), which sets the rates, is divided. Some favor cuts to address potential weakness in the labor market, while others worry that another cut could worsen inflation. Investors are eager to understand the members' perspectives from the post-meeting statement and Chair Jerome Powell's press conference on Wednesday afternoon.

The previous trading session reflected this uncertainty. The S&P 500 closed down 0.1% on Tuesday, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost almost 0.4%, impacted by losses in JPMorgan shares. However, the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite saw a small increase of about 0.1%, boosted by gains in companies like Broadcom, Tesla, and Alphabet.

And this is the part most people miss... A sector rotation is underway. The Russell 2000 index, which tracks small-cap companies, hit a new all-time intraday high on Tuesday. This surge is likely due to the anticipation of rate cuts. Smaller companies often benefit from these cuts because their borrowing costs are more closely tied to market rates, potentially improving their profit margins.

Doug Beath, a global equity strategist at Wells Fargo Investment Institute, noted that while the Russell 2000 has underperformed the S&P 500 this year, it has rallied since November 21st and has outperformed the broader market index since that date.

Beath believes that the positive change for small-cap equities aligns with the view that equity market breadth is widening. He anticipates accelerating economic growth through 2026 due to positive long-term trends, including tax cuts, deregulation, more Fed rate cuts, and continued growth in technology capital expenditures.

Oracle's AI-Fueled Debt: A Cause for Concern?

Oracle investors are on edge as they assess the software giant's position in the artificial intelligence boom. With the company's fiscal second-quarter earnings report on the horizon, pressure is mounting on management to demonstrate that Oracle can finance its aggressive infrastructure plans while convincing Wall Street that the AI-driven hypergrowth story is still intact.

Daniel Sorid, head of U.S. investment-grade credit strategy at Citi, expressed concern about the transformation requiring a substantial amount of capital. Oracle shares have risen nearly 33% year-to-date, despite double-digit losses in October, which was the worst month since 2001.

Stocks Making Moves After Hours:

  • AeroVironment: Shares of the defense technology provider fell over 4% after its second-quarter earnings missed analyst expectations.
  • Cracker Barrel Old Country Store: Shares of the restaurant company dropped approximately 9% in extended trading after its first-quarter revenue fell short of Wall Street's expectations.
  • GE Vernova: The energy giant saw its shares climb roughly 7% after it raised its 2026 revenue forecast and doubled its quarterly dividend to 50 cents from 25 cents per share. The company also authorized the buyback of $10 billion of stock.
