Rare Red 'Elve' Lights Up Italian Sky — Photographer Captures Stunning Phenomenon (2026)

A breathtaking moment was captured by a photographer, revealing a mysterious red halo that briefly illuminated the Italian Alps. This rare phenomenon, known as an 'Elve,' has left many in awe and sparked curiosity about the wonders of nature.

Elves, short for 'Emissions of Light and Very Low Frequency Perturbations due to Electromagnetic Pulse Sources,' are not your typical lightning strikes. These disk-shaped flashes expand rapidly, reaching up to an incredible 300 miles in diameter, yet they only last for a fraction of a second. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), these events occur high above thunderstorms, where a powerful electromagnetic pulse shoots upward into the ionosphere, the same region where the mesmerizing auroras form.

The photographer, Binotto, had initially set out to capture another rare phenomenon known as sprites, which are brief electrical discharges above thunderstorms. However, luck was on his side as he managed to capture this extraordinary Elve instead. Using a Sony A7S with a specialized lens and high ISO settings, Binotto was able to freeze this fleeting moment in time. He shared his excitement with Space.com, stating, "I didn't capture any sprites, but I'm thrilled to have captured this Elve!"

Binotto explained that this particular Elve was generated by an incredibly powerful negative lightning strike in a storm located about 300 km south of his position. The lightning bolt reached an astonishing -303 kilo-ampères, producing an intense electromagnetic pulse that illuminated the ionosphere. This Elve hovered approximately 100 miles above Earth's surface and spanned an impressive 200 miles in diameter, as reported by Spaceweather.com.

This isn't Binotto's first encounter with this eerie phenomenon. On March 23, 2023, he captured an even more dramatic Elve from his home in Possagno. That image showcased the red halo's expansion across the sky in remarkable detail.

So, what do you think about these rare atmospheric events? Do you find them fascinating or perhaps a bit unsettling? Feel free to share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below! We'd love to hear your unique perspectives on these captivating natural occurrences.
