Norway's latest infrastructure project is a game-changer, and it's not just about the length. The Scandinavian nation is constructing an undersea tunnel so extensive that it requires its own roundabout, a unique feature for an underwater passage.
You might be familiar with the Holland Tunnel into Manhattan or the Battery Tunnel into Brooklyn, but Norway's new tunnel, named Rogfast, takes it to another level. Stretching an impressive 17 miles from Stavanger in the south to Haugesund in the north, it also connects the island of Kvitsøy with an innovative undersea double roundabout.
But here's where it gets interesting: While the tunnel itself will have a standard design with two separate tubes, each accommodating two-way traffic, the roundabout is a different story. Americans might struggle with surface-level traffic circles, but Norwegians seem to have mastered the art of navigating them, even when they're a staggering 850 feet underwater!
And this underwater wonder doesn't stop there. Not only is it long, but it's also incredibly deep. Designed to replace ferry routes, it will be the longest car tunnel under the sea, dwarfing the Channel Tunnel in length. Imagine driving at a depth of nearly a quarter-mile beneath the North Sea!
Construction hasn't been without its challenges, though. The crew has encountered saltwater leaks even before reaching 1,000 feet, and the water pressure will only intensify as they dig deeper. By the time they reach the planned depth of 1,286 feet, the water pressure will soar. Yet, Norwegian authorities remain optimistic, dividing the task between two teams approaching from opposite ends, aiming for a near-perfect meet in the middle.
