No Compromise: Putin and Trump Envoys Discuss Ukraine Peace Talks (2025)

The world holds its breath as the conflict in Ukraine rages on, with no end in sight. A five-hour Kremlin meeting between President Putin and US envoys has left us with more questions than answers.

Despite President Trump's efforts, the US and Russia failed to reach a compromise on a peace deal during their lengthy discussions. This ongoing war has been a challenging foreign policy issue for Trump's presidency, with both Putin and Ukrainian President Zelensky facing his criticism.

The talks, which extended past midnight, were led by Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, and his son-in-law, Jared Kushner. Putin's top foreign policy advisor, Yuri Ushakov, revealed that no compromises were found, leaving much work to be done.

"There is still a lot of work to be done," Ushakov stated, highlighting the complexity of the situation.

Putin's negative reaction to certain US proposals adds another layer of complexity. Witkoff, a real estate developer with a long history with Trump, and Kushner, his son-in-law, met with Putin and his team in the Kremlin, but the details of their discussions remain undisclosed.

"Some American draft proposals look more or less acceptable, but they need to be discussed," Ushakov commented, leaving room for interpretation.

The talks were not without controversy. Witkoff and Kushner's stroll across Red Square, past the mausoleum of Vladimir Lenin, symbolized a delicate balance between the past and the present. They met with Putin and his team, including Kirill Dmitriev, through interpreters, further emphasizing the complexity of the negotiations.

Trump himself acknowledged the difficulty of the situation, describing it as a "mess" with high casualties. Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 has led to a major confrontation with the West, reminiscent of the Cold War era.

A leaked set of US draft peace proposals in November caused concern among Ukrainian and European officials, who felt it favored Moscow's demands. In response, European powers proposed a counter-offer, and the US and Ukraine claimed to have developed an "updated peace framework" during talks in Geneva.

"There will be no easy solutions... It is important that everything is fair and open," Zelensky emphasized during his visit to Dublin.

Just before the Kremlin meeting, Putin made a bold statement, saying Russia did not want war with Europe but warned that if Europe started one, it would be over quickly, leaving no one for Russia to negotiate with. He also threatened to cut Ukraine's access to the sea, in response to drone attacks on Russian tankers in the Black Sea, a move that Ukraine's Foreign Minister, Andrii Sybiha, believes shows Putin's lack of readiness to end the war.

"Putin's remarks indicate he is not ready to end the war," Sybiha said.

As the situation remains tense, the world watches and waits, hoping for a peaceful resolution. But here's where it gets controversial: Should the US continue to pursue a peace deal with Russia, or is it time to consider other strategies? And this is the part most people miss: What role does Europe play in these negotiations, and how can they influence the outcome? These are questions that need answering as we navigate this complex geopolitical landscape.
