The Lin Xiang Xiong Art Gallery, a new RM100 million cultural landmark, has opened in Penang, promising to elevate the city's status as a global arts hub. With over 1,000 artworks on display, the gallery aims to be a beacon for art enthusiasts worldwide.
George Town witnessed the official unveiling ceremony, hosted by Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow. The ceremony was attended by esteemed guests, including former French Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin and the gallery's visionary founder, Prof. Lin Xiang Xiong.
Chow emphasized the gallery's role in transforming Penang into a premier destination for art and cultural experiences, akin to renowned institutions like the Louvre and Tate Modern. He highlighted a growing trend among tourists who plan their travels around these cultural attractions, seeking immersive art experiences.
"By establishing a strong artistic identity, Penang can become even more appealing to visitors," Chow stated. This initiative is particularly significant as Malaysia prepares for the Visit Malaysia Year 2026, aiming to diversify its offerings beyond heritage.
"We need to explore new avenues, fresh content, and unique experiences to keep Penang at the forefront of global interest," he added. Lin Xiang Xiong, aged 80, underscored the profound impact of art in today's tumultuous world, emphasizing its ability to stabilize emotions and foster understanding in times of tension.
"While art cannot directly halt wars, it possesses the power to enlighten minds," Lin stated. The gallery's inaugural exhibition, titled Picasso and Lin Xiang Xiong: A Dialogue Across Time, delves into the artistic synergy between Picasso's modernist style and Lin's Eastern perspectives. This exhibition explores themes of anti-war, anti-poverty, and environmental awareness, aligning with the gallery's "Art for Peace" mission.
The Art for Peace International High-Level Art Forum, held concurrently, gathered influential leaders from UNESCO, France, Brazil, Japan, China, and Malaysia. The gallery, located at The Light Waterfront, boasts a RM100 million valuation. Rising eight stories, it houses a diverse collection of over 1,000 artworks, with over 400 displayed through dynamic rotations.
The gallery's facilities include an art education center, permanent exhibition floors, a special exhibition hall, and an international collaboration conference room. The sixth floor serves as an international exhibition platform for prominent global artists and curated projects.
Beyond showcasing Lin's works, the gallery aims to foster sustained international artistic exchange through exhibitions, forums, and educational programs. Currently in a soft-opening phase, the gallery will welcome the public from Tuesday, December 16, operating from Tuesday to Sunday, with Mondays reserved for closure. Tickets will be available for on-site purchase during this period, with online systems to be introduced progressively.
