The music world mourns the loss of LaMonte McLemore, a legendary singer and photographer who passed away at the age of 90. McLemore was a founding member of the iconic vocal group, the 5th Dimension, whose harmonious blend of pop, soul, and psychedelia captivated audiences in the 1960s and 70s. Born in St. Louis, McLemore's journey began in the US Navy, where his talent for aerial photography shone. He later transitioned into baseball, playing in the Los Angeles Dodgers' farm system. It was in Southern California that McLemore discovered his true calling, both in music and photography. He joined the Hi-Fi's, a jazz ensemble, alongside future 5th Dimension bandmate Marilyn McCoo. This group laid the foundation for the 5th Dimension's success, which would soon take off. In 1965, McLemore, McCoo, and childhood friends Billy Davis Jr. and Ronald Towson, along with teacher Florence LaRue, formed the Versatiles. They signed with Johnny Rivers' Soul City Records, marking a pivotal moment in their career. Rivers suggested a name change, and thus, the 5th Dimension was born, reflecting their embrace of psychedelia and hippy culture. The group's breakthrough hit, 'Go Where You Wanna Go,' by the Mamas & the Papas, propelled them to success. However, it was their 1967 release, 'Up, Up and Away,' written by Jimmy Webb, that truly solidified their place in music history. This song not only reached number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 but also won four prestigious Grammys, including Record of the Year and Best Contemporary Single. McLemore's impact extended beyond music. He was a talented photographer, with his pictures appearing in magazines like Jet. McLemore is survived by his loving family, including his wife, Mieko McLemore, and children, Ciara and Darin, as well as his sister, Joan, and three grandchildren. His legacy as a singer and photographer will forever be remembered and celebrated.
