At one point, Representative Maxine Waters from California, who serves as the leading Democrat on the House Financial Services Committee, directed her frustration at Chairman French Hill from Arkansas. This came as Bessent consistently interrupted her inquiries and disregarded her attempts to reclaim her speaking time by asserting, "I’m reclaiming my time."
In response to the escalating tension, Bessent retorted, "Can you maintain some level of dignity?" The discussion centered around President Donald Trump's tariffs, particularly their impact on the home construction sector.
The purpose of this hearing was to delve into the annual report from the Financial Stability Oversight Council, an entity responsible for monitoring the health and stability of the U.S. financial system. However, as the session progressed, other Democrats joined Waters in declaring "reclaiming my time" as they too struggled to get their points across amidst the chaos that ensued.
Another moment of contention arose when Massachusetts Congressman Stephen Lynch questioned Bessent about a perceived slowdown in corporate investigations. Lynch asked if this development raised any concerns for the Secretary. Bessent countered, "Well, the questions have to be serious," showcasing the underlying friction during the exchange. Throughout the hearing, Hill frequently had to remind Bessent to allow committee members their speaking time, emphasizing the need for decorum.
During discussions about whether the Treasury intended to utilize the Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFI) Fund, aimed at fostering economic growth in underprivileged areas for housing projects, Ohio Representative Joyce Beatty found herself in a heated argument with Bessent. After he failed to provide a straightforward answer to her direct question, she said emphatically, "I'm trying to be respectful, but you're not going to dictate my allocated time. Just give me a yes or no, or say you won't answer, and I’ll move on."
In response, Bessent casually replied, "Uh, number three," prompting Beatty to declare, "Let the record show that he refuses to answer a question." As Bessent attempted to interject again, she firmly stated, "No, no, we're not doing that with me. We are not doing that with me."
Further complicating the proceedings, New York Representative Gregory Meeks confronted Bessent about allegations that Trump’s cryptocurrency firm sold a $500 million stake to a member of the Emirati royal family just before Trump took office. He sought assurance that Bessent would halt operations on this matter and initiate a thorough investigation. In response, Bessent claimed that an independent agency would handle oversight. He then pivoted the conversation to question Meeks about a 2006 trip to Venezuela, insinuating some impropriety.
Meeks took this as a sign that Bessent did not wish to engage with his inquiry, arguing, "I interpret that as a no. You’re avoiding the question." As their exchange became more heated, Bessent continued, "For 7 billion..." before Hill interrupted, signaling that Meeks had exceeded his time limit. In a passionate outburst, Meeks turned to Bessent, demanding, "Stop covering for the president. Don't be a flunky. Work for the American people. Don't be a coverup for a mob."
At various points during the hearing, Hill reminded participants of the House's standards for maintaining decorum. Republican Representative Andy Barr from Kentucky expressed sympathy to Bessent, commenting, "What we’re witnessing in this hearing, Mr. Secretary, is how deeply Trump derangement syndrome affects emotional stability. There have been numerous lectures directed at you today."
Democratic representatives voiced their disapproval regarding the tone of the hearing. Missouri's Rep. Emanuel Cleaver lamented, "This hearing has turned into something quite embarrassing. California's Rep. Juan Vargas, in light of the unprofessional conduct displayed, chose not to pursue his planned questions.
