A dolphin's daring appearance in Venice has sparked a rescue mission! The charismatic bottlenose, nicknamed Mimmo, has been captivating locals and tourists alike with its graceful acrobatics in the lagoon. But this delightful display has also raised concerns among animal and environmental activists, who fear for Mimmo's safety amidst the bustling boat traffic.
Mimmo's recent appearance in St. Mark's basin, the iconic body of water fronting the famous square, has drawn attention to the potential risks it faces. While the dolphin has been entertaining onlookers with its leaps and tricks, activists worry that it could fall victim to the propellers of the numerous boats navigating the busy lagoon.
The dolphin was first spotted by Manuel Tiffi, a water taxi driver, on June 23rd. In an interview with Corriere della Sera in October, Tiffi shared that Mimmo often swims "right in front of the bow," and taxi drivers report sightings to warn others to be cautious. However, Tiffi noted that "the animal seems to have no fear."
But here's where it gets controversial... While some onlookers have been respectful, others have been less so. There have been reports of people throwing balls at Mimmo, chasing it in boats, and even organizing "selfie tours" to capitalize on the dolphin's presence.
Cristina Romieri, who initiated the "Save the Dolphin" campaign, emphasizes that Mimmo is not a tourist attraction but a wild animal that needs to be returned to a healthier environment. She explains that while the lagoon may be suitable for dolphins, St. Mark's basin is a different story due to the constant traffic of water taxis, steamers, and other vessels.
Experts from Cert, an emergency response team for stranded marine animals affiliated with the University of Padova, along with coastguard personnel, have been monitoring Mimmo and are working to guide it back to the open sea. The coastguard has issued a warning to skippers, urging them to maintain a distance of at least 50 meters if they spot the dolphin.
Bottlenose dolphins are the most common dolphin species in Italian waters, and while they typically move in pods, there have been several recent cases of solitary dolphins in the Adriatic. Guido Pietroluongo, a researcher at Cert, explains that these dolphins often follow fishermen in the northern Adriatic and may become separated from their group, finding themselves in areas with human activity.
"The parameters of the lagoon are very similar to those of the sea," Pietroluongo says, "and the lagoon is teeming with fish. So this animal is in the lagoon because it's feeding—otherwise, it would have perished within a week."
Pietroluongo adds that it's not unusual for dolphins to wander, and based on what the experts have observed so far, Mimmo is a skilled navigator. "The key is not to disturb it," he advises. "Just as no one would dream of approaching a lion in St. Mark's Square and giving it a hug, the same respect should be afforded to a dolphin. It's a wild animal, even though many see it as a friendly companion."
The rescue effort for Mimmo highlights the delicate balance between appreciating the beauty of wildlife and ensuring their safety and well-being. As the campaign to save Mimmo continues, it serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible tourism and the need to protect our marine ecosystems.
