Darren Lockyer REVEALS Super League Club He Turned Down! | Rugby League Legend (2026)

Rugby league icon Darren Lockyer has made headlines by revealing the Super League club he chose not to join, shedding light on his decision to stay in Australia rather than pursue a career in the northern hemisphere.

Often regarded as one of the sport’s all-time greats, and frequently ranked among the top ten players ever, Lockyer enjoyed a remarkable career with 355 appearances in the National Rugby League (NRL), exclusively for the Brisbane Broncos, where he achieved the impressive feat of winning four Grand Finals. Additionally, he represented Australia in an astounding 59 matches and played 36 times for Queensland, leading both teams as captain before retiring at the age of 34 in 2011.

After hanging up his boots, Lockyer has remained actively involved in rugby league, recently taking on a role as part-owner of the London Broncos. During an appearance on Sky Sports' 'The Bench Podcast,' he not only discussed his current endeavors but also revealed the Super League club he declined to join.

Throughout his career, Lockyer received multiple offers from Super League teams, including the Leeds Rhinos, which was known for being a financially lucrative option during that era. Reflecting on this, he stated, "I had a few approaches from Super League clubs over the years, Leeds was one," while explaining how enticing the Super League was for many NRL players at the time.

"Back then, a lot of players would come over here towards the end of their careers to experience travel and take advantage of significant financial incentives. Often, players were earning more here than back home in Australia, although that has shifted since then."

However, despite these attractive offers, Lockyer ultimately chose to retire from professional play. He elaborated on his reasoning: "I decided against the Super League because I had just welcomed my first child and was presented with numerous opportunities in the corporate sector, so I decided to step away from playing."

It’s hard to imagine how impactful a 34-year-old Lockyer could have been in the Super League; he would have undoubtedly been considered one of the biggest signings in the league's history had he chosen to make that move. When asked about the possibility of joining London if they had been the promising club they are today, Lockyer gave an insightful and thoughtful response.

He shared, "We’ve told our players that they’ve taken a leap of faith by relocating their families here. For me, moving over here as a player would have been a significant risk, but I do believe London is a fantastic city. It certainly would have been a tough decision to make."
