Cycling 15,000 Miles to Australia: Son's Tribute to His Father's Journey (2026)

Son Recreates Father's Epic Bike Trip to Australia 40 Years Later

A cyclist has embarked on an extraordinary journey, traveling over 15,000 miles by bike from the UK to Australia, mirroring the route his father took at the same age in 1984. Jamie Hargreaves, 23, set out to retrace his father Phill's path, riding through 30 countries and three continents on the same model and year of bike. This seven-month adventure ended just before Christmas, following in his father's footsteps with remarkable dedication.

The journey began in May from Derby, where Phill started his journey 38 years prior. Hargreaves then took a ferry to France, cycling southeast through Belgium, Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia before heading to Turkey. However, he faced a challenge when he couldn't follow his father's path through Iran due to modern geopolitical restrictions. Instead, he opted for a longer route, traveling through Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Afghanistan before rejoining the original path in Pakistan.

Hargreaves' determination to surpass his father's achievements led him to Annapurna Base Camp, in addition to reaching Everest Base Camp. He shared his motivation with the BBC, stating, 'I had to beat my old man.' His Instagram following exceeded 130,000, where he recreated the photographs his father took nearly four decades ago, offering a unique perspective on the same locations.

One of the most demanding stretches of the trip was the Kazakhstan desert, where Hargreaves battled strong winds for about a month. He described the experience as grueling, stating, 'The wind was blowing east to west, and we were cycling west to east, making it incredibly challenging.' Despite the hardships, he found inspiration in meeting his girlfriend in Vietnam, which rekindled his enthusiasm for the journey.

Hargreaves' resourcefulness was evident as he begged and bartered for food, carrying all his necessities on his back, along with his cherished ukulele, a single luxury item. After Nepal, he flew to Bangkok and then hopped back on his bike to cycle through Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, ultimately finishing his journey in Australia.

Although the initial plan was to end in Derby, Australia, Hargreaves decided to finish in Sydney's Derby Street, a more fitting conclusion. Phill Hargreaves expressed his pride in his son's achievement, stating, 'I'm very proud that he managed to follow the route I followed 40 years ago.' He was particularly proud of Jamie's accomplishment of reaching both Annapurna and Everest Base Camps.
