Ever wondered about the powerhouse shaping Southeast Asia? It's the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN, and it's more impactful than you might realize. Let's dive in!
On August 8, 1967, in Bangkok, Thailand, ASEAN was born. The founding fathers from Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand signed the ASEAN Declaration (Bangkok Declaration), setting the stage for regional cooperation.
Over time, ASEAN expanded. Brunei Darussalam joined on January 7, 1984. Then, Viet Nam on July 28, 1995, Lao PDR and Myanmar on July 23, 1997, and Cambodia on April 30, 1999. Today, ASEAN boasts a total of ten member states, each contributing to its diverse tapestry.
In 2009, leaders laid out a roadmap for the ASEAN Community (2009-2015). This community, launched in 2015, is built on three main pillars: Political-Security, Economic, and Socio-Cultural.
To keep the momentum going, the ASEAN 2025: Forging Ahead Together vision was introduced in 2015. This includes the ASEAN Community Vision 2025, along with blueprints for each of the three community pillars.
