Unpacking the Carry-On Conundrum: What Air NZ and Jetstar Say Travelers Need to Know
We've all been there: boarding a packed flight, only to find the overhead compartments stuffed to the brim. It's a common frustration, but it's not just about personal inconvenience. Excessive carry-on luggage can actually slow down boarding, force crew to juggle bags, and even pose safety risks.
As airlines across Australasia tighten their grip on oversized cabin bags, travelers are left wondering: what are the rules for carry-on luggage, and how do they differ between airlines?
To shed some light on this, 1News reached out to New Zealand's two largest carriers, Air New Zealand and Jetstar, to get the inside scoop on their carry-on policies and the reasons behind them.
Air New Zealand's Carry-On Conundrum
Air New Zealand allows passengers one carry-on bag weighing up to 7kg, along with a small personal item like a handbag or laptop case. This policy, according to Rachel Lilley, the airline's head of regional airports, is designed with several key considerations in mind:
- Space and Weight Constraints: The airline's overhead lockers have limited space and weight capacity, and adhering to these limits helps prevent overcrowding and potential injuries to both passengers and crew.
- Smooth Boarding and Punctuality: By enforcing a single carry-on bag, Air New Zealand aims to streamline the boarding process, ensuring a more efficient and timely departure.
Lilley emphasizes the importance of fairness in the application of this policy, stating, "We are consistently applying our policy and encouraging customers to check the requirements before traveling, so everyone has a clear understanding and a fair experience."
Jetstar's Carry-On Flexibility
Jetstar takes a slightly different approach, allowing passengers two carry-on items with a combined weight of up to 7kg. However, they offer an additional option for those who need more space: travelers can purchase an extra carry-on allowance of 7kg, bringing the total to 14kg.
The budget airline's spokesperson highlights the safety and operational benefits of their policy, stating, "Cabin baggage limits are applied across our network, including in New Zealand, to support safe and punctual operations."
Despite this, Jetstar acknowledges the stress that their current system can cause for travelers, particularly regarding weight limits and gate weighing. To address this, the airline is currently reviewing its cabin baggage policy, focusing on reducing gate-related frustration and improving the overall boarding experience.
Any changes made will be made in consultation with staff and will prioritize safety, punctuality, and a positive experience for both travelers and front-line teams. As of now, no final decisions have been made.
